TAPPING THE DORMANT KNOWLEDGE, EXPEREINCE AND EXPERTISE OF PROFESSIONALLY QUALIFIED NON WORKING MOTHERS!

This view of the woman has undergone a radical change since the beginning of the human civilisation. In the hunting age, the husband and wife acted in unison to hunt animals and collect the food necessary for their survival. Then in the farming age, both men and women worked together equally hard on the land to grow their sustenance. With the dawn of the industrial revolution in the 18th century, more and more women worked in factories side by side with their male partners. In the Second World War triggered out by Germany’s Hitler and Italy’s Mussolini, women soldiers fought in the war front as efficiently as their male counterparts. And today, women do most of the jobs which were earlier the sole domain of the male.
However, the conventional attitude that women should accept the sole responsibility for child-bearing, child-caring and all other domestic cores has become a great disadvantage for mothers whose freedom has been seriously curtailed by this state of affairs. In a way, this looks like some kind of discrimination against women by virtue of the fact that when once an employed mother gets a child, she is compelled to resign her post and stay at home to look after the offspring.
This condition prevails more especially and outstandingly in Asian countries. Let us take a concrete example. Sri Lanka’s population according to the 2001 census is 20 million. Out of this 50.5% are females and 49.5 males. 92.3 per cent of the total population are literate. This is the highest literacy rate in the Asian region and on par with those of the United States and European countries. More and more girls enter universities in the country each year and also go abroad for higher education. In the field of other professional education too it is the same story. The other sad factor is that, though more get qualified annually for university entrance, they do not get admission due to lack of places in these educational institutions.
The other important factor which has not received the due recognition of the authorities concerned is that, when these graduated and professionally qualified girls get employed, which is the main aim of their education, most of them continue with their employment only for a few years. When they enter into marriage and get children, they are compelled to resign their jobs to stay at home to look after their kids. Is this not a sad situation?
The result of this unfortunate situation is two-fold. While these mothers are deprived of reaping the economic benefit of the education that they received by toiling hard day and night, the amount of money that the state spent for them from the kindergarten to the university level is a colossal waste.
On the one hand, the loss of income from gainful employment has a serious affect on the living standard of the whole family causing it to reduce proportionately the amenities that they enjoyed before. On the other hand, the elimination of experienced hands equipped with especial knowledge and expertise in their particular
Field of work is an inestimable disadvantage to a country which is trying to achieve economic self sufficiency. So, it is in the general interest of the countries concerned to consider the question of the professionally-qualified non-working mothers with greater seriousness and creativity and establish childcare centres equipped with medical, recreational and educational provision so that they would be able to remain in their jobs until the age of their retirement.
The real parity of status in the matter of employment for women with men could be achieved only if the states provide mothers with these facilities ensuring that their kids are properly looked after and brought up in these centres.
